The Holiday Season Trap, Michael McLean NoBullBook.com coming to you on a gorgeous but windy morning. Out for my 55-minute walk to the point and back down by the lake with our dog Clifford, and I wanted to shoot this video to talk about one of my favorite topics this time of year.
I call it, the Holiday Christmas Business Trap and I've talked about this with my clients for a number of years after experiencing this personally in all of my different businesses, my hockey team in December, my barbershop in December my insurance agency in December and when I got into those businesses, years ago, I remember sitting down with my dad at McLean Insurance. And in the Insurance Business, you're in the renewal business every single month.
So many - such amount of money renews and you pay your people, you pay your taxes and you hopefully make a profit and, the insurance business is extremely consistent. You know what you're dealing with every month in terms of policies renewing.
And I was going through the financials when I was purchasing McLean Insurance from my dad in two thousand and - let me see - It doesn't really matter - was 17 years ago and I'm looking at the renewals for December, December.
And all of our months were over a million dollars in renewals, which is not uncommon in the insurance business Home and Car policies. Renew and get a million dollars and that's what you're working with, plus you write some new business, but for December, I'm looking at the financials and I'm sitting there with my dad and I'm like Dad we have like 400 thousand, four hundred thousand plus in renewals in December compared to other months where we had a 1.2M, 1.4M, 1.1M.
You have this lame duck month of December.
And I'm like what the hell happened here. Like, how are we going to pay our people were going to lose money this month and he's like, well, that's the way it is in our industry. He says nobody, you know, buys insurance policies or nobody, you know, buys homes or cars in December. Nobody's calling in for new business quotes. Nobody's calling for life insurance, umbrella insurance.
And coming from the sports industry, I just said to myself, you know, that's such bullshit and that is what I call pablum opinion projected from employees onto owners and CEOs. That basically says, you know what, I'm going to mail this month in. I'm going to mail this month in because it's the end of the year and the year is almost over. So I'm not going to really work hard. I'm not going to sell hard. I'm not going to do anything to create activity, but I'm going to take my paycheck anyway.
So, soon as I saw this lousy month, I spent the next decade in the insurance business correcting those December numbers and to our staff's credit, we were able to bump that month up of December, from being like 60 percent lower than other months, right up to on par with every other month. And it took some work, it took some time and it took some marketing.
So what I decided to do right then and there is I decided to go on a marketing and advertising and promotional - just absolutely Relentless - doing whatever it took to sell as much Insurance to the niche markets that we were providing in that month.
But before I did any of that, before I did any of that, the first thing I did is I had one of my stand-up team meetings. I don't believe in sitting team meetings. In the insurance business we would meet for 5-10 minutes a month upstairs in the Kitchen by the boardroom and I literally hold stand-up meetings where boom, boom, boom this is what we did well. Boom, boom, boom, this is what we got to do better. Hand out the bonuses. Some people get bonuses. Some people don't, it's all on results. Bottom line results. Good behavior was always rewarded financially and I had a meeting with the staff with my team. And I'm like, listen, I said, this is going to change. This is a mindset.
This is as much mindset as anything else where we're just saying, okay, we're not busy. The phones aren't ringing, nobody's asking for quotes and all that stuff, just absolute nonsense.
So what I started doing is I doubled down on everything as I told you a few videos ago. I got up to the point where at McLean Insurance we were mailing, mailing, physical Flyers, 120 thousand Flyers per month, every single month, but in the early days, we would be mailing 250 Flyers, 500 flyers per month, this is when I first started taking over my dad's company. So, instead of 500 flyers. What I did is I tripled or doubled down on that and I remember expanding the circle around my desk from five miles to 10 miles and mailing, three times as much, 3x to everything and it was amazing.
Because instead of 500, flyers going out we had 1500 or 2000 Flyers going out. I sent emails to - we have a huge email list. I sent emails out to all of our clients, all of our prospects. We did some radio advertising. We did some television advertising and then our csrs, our service workers. I gave them a little script and I mailed the card, a yellow card, a tiny yellow card to different people on their list to ask for their expanded business. In other words, if we had their car and didn't have their house we sent them a card saying, give us a call. We'd like to quote on your home, so growing out and cross-selling that business.
Our phones absolutely blew up for 30 days right up to Christmas - Past Christmas, right to New Year's and we set records for sales. I incentivized all of our people, our service people, our sales people our receptionist.
I incentivize every single person to pull that rope in the same direction. We made it fun. We had daily charts. We had Wheels to spin and I made it like a professional team culture where there's individual bonuses. But if we hit this million-dollar Mark, then you're going to - like we also had a huge wow bonus as well. And I forget what that was. Maybe it was a two-day trip or some dinners out - whatever it was, some time off in the New Year. Whatever it was. It worked.
And I continued that on for 17, 16 years after that, and grew that December.
The same thing happened I've been coaching and preaching in the hockey business for years. It didn't matter whether I was coaching Pro, guys playing for money or coaching amateurs, guys that are in University and college.
Always always, I found that mindset distraction, lack of focus, lack of motivation, whatever you want to call it. I don't, I don't care what you want to call it.
I call it losing. And in December and I've coached for 22 years in December with all my teams, I used to always focus, on making them focused. And I did that as a coach by being more of a hard-ass, more of a hard-ass in December than any other month of the year. And the reason I did this is because most other teams and their players and their coaches were asleep at the switch.
Oh it's two weeks to Christmas. Oh it's three weeks to Christmas. Oh this is Christmas week. We're going to have five days off and the quality of hockey on the ice just disintegrated into the ground because of lack of focus.
I did the badass opposite. I cracked the whip, like, never before in practice. We did more video. We talked more about nutrition. We set five-game goals and we held our players and our staff accountable. Once again, what happened, by doing the direct opposite of what everybody else was doing, is we piled up the points in December.
We would finish the Year with a seven-game winning streak, a nine-game winning streak. We finished the year with 14 points, 20 points, whatever for the month. And it was always one of our very top months because we chose not to follow the crowd and be distracted and be half assed, and just mail in the last 30 days of the year.
And I'm going to tell you as a pro coach, the same as an entrepreneur, two points in December, are the same as two points in March before the playoffs. Four Points in December is the same as four points any other time of the year. So this was our secret weapon and it was one of the reasons we always had TOP first place clubs and, you know, we would win first place by three points or two points at the end of the year, but guess when we could have lost first place, we could have lost first place in December, okay, if we had taken that road, you know that regular road that pathway where we just don't care and we're going home and it's Christmas. So shrug your shoulders and take it easy. Never ever my style.
The last example, I'll give you, true story in the Barbershop business. I started a barber shop and a barbershop franchise five years ago. I hit that wave just as it got extremely popular and it continues today, we're the number one Barber Shop, three of the last five years in the entire country. I mean, I don't know. I don't know scissors from a football and I've never cut hair, but I know how to Market and sell a business. So we're not actually in the barber shop business. I'm not in the barber shop business. I'm in the membership business to at Father and Sons Barbershop. It's we sell memberships. We sell memberships to Men and to, even to kids where we charge them every month and there's different levels. There's Platinum, there's gold and there's silver. So instead of sitting there and trying to run a business where you don't know, you have to depend on the weather, you have to depend on the time of year. It could be Thanksgiving. It could be Christmas. It could be summer and your revenues are fluctuating up and down Peaks and valleys.
I decided to apply my membership, which I did. I had a membership in the hockey business. Season tickets is membership. Corporate sponsorship is membership. The same in the insurance business, every single month. Every renewal is membership. I did the same thing in the barbering industry and it helped us, avoid those Peaks and valleys. And in the end I mean, it didn't matter. Like day-to-day whether the weather was bad or whether you only had 15 people instead of 60 in the barbershop.
But as soon as I got into the industry, the barbering industry there again waiting for me was that holiday BS excuse. Well, you know, it's getting close to Christmas and you know how people are and you know, they'll get their hair cut and we should probably close. We should probably close between Christmas and New Year's, you know, to give the staff a break and all this beautiful stuff. Well, once again, I had a meeting with my team and I said - this is going to be our number one month. This isn't going to be a good month - year after year. This is going to be our number one month and I didn't just talk about it. I put my money behind it and I put the McLean BadAss Marketing Machine behind it. And that was a month where we mailed more. We sent a physical newsletter to every single one on our list at our Barbershop.
Yes, we collect everyone's physical mailing address. We have everybody's email. We have everybody cell phone. We texted people. We emailed people and it was all a soft Christmas / New Year sell. Where - what Are you going to get - What are you going to what - You know, it's so easy to sell thousands and thousands of dollars in gift certificates. If you think like your prospect. Like most spouses, most wives, most girlfriends are like, what am I going to get for my boyfriend or my husband?
Well, a gift certificate for a hot towel shave, a haircut and a beer at the Father and Son Barbershop. So we promoted the hell out of these gift certificates. 35 bucks, 45 bucks. They come in they buy them. Done. Is the husband or the boyfriend or the son happy? Well you think about it, hot towel shave, haircut, a cold beer and you're out the door. But if I keep it a secret, I can't sell it.
So we sent out emails. We send out texts. We did Direct Mail. We sent out our physical newsletter and signage. Radio ads. And once again one of our strongest months in the barbering industry has been for 5 years counting - has been December. And what are they saying in the rest of the industry? Well, you know, it's a lousy month and January is a lot better and that kind of stuff.
So my rule today is instead of waiting to kick start the year on January 1st, when 95% of the population is tired and hungover. What about gaining momentum, kick-starting it up in December, which is now and just rocking into that New Year, if that's what you need.
Momentum is so underrated. It's underrated in sports. It's underrated in business, and it's underrated in personal life. And I know that from experience. When you get positive motivation in your business or your life, there's no stopping you. And the last thing you need is to ever ever ever stop when things are going well, so you get things going in December you get your team rocking and rolling. You get your marketing, you get your direct mail. You get the phone ringing off the hook. You get some sales and man oh man, you just cruise in, you set the tone for a brand new year.
It's the same as working out. I'm on day number 46 of, I've worked out every single day for 46 straight days because I started a 365-day fitness challenge.
Over the next year I have to work out for a minimum 20 minutes a day and I work out for about 45 minutes, but minimum 20 minutes a day for an entire year. Why did I start that 46 days ago? I started it to give me momentum through November and December so I have momentum. I'm not starting fresh on January 1st. I'm already, I've got the momentum and I'm already thinking about the New Year.
I'm not talking about it. I'm doing it. So setting the tone and it starts with you, you're the lead dog in your business. If you're operating at a nine and a half, your team is operating at a seven and a half. If you're only operating at a seven and a half out of ten, then your teams operating at a five and a half. So you set the tone mentally, physically, energy, the whole thing.
Well, start setting the tone now for an amazing 2022. So, that is my message for today. It's all about avoiding what everybody else does. 99% of the people, you know, packing on the pounds, eating all the food, drinking all the booze, and all this stuff. When you as a BadAss Millionaire, you want to do the exact opposite.
There's nothing wrong with celebrating the season, but it doesn't mean that you have to start your new year with a thud.
What it means is pick your spots.
I tell my players all the time. I mean, I'm not a saint and I don't want to be a saint. I pick my spots. 97% of the time. I eat clean. I drink a gallon of water. I do my writing, I do my walking and all that great stuff, but I pick my spots for the other stuff and just because it's Christmas and New Year's doesn't mean you have to shut it down, and destroy your mind and destroy your body and get yourself all stressed and get yourself all bent out of shape. So that then you start the new year, you're physically ill in a lot of cases. I know a ton of business owners who worked their asses off all year long and they finally get a little bit of time off between Christmas and New Year's.
And what does their body and mind do? It shuts down on them. They get physically ill. So head the other direction. Be a renegade, be a contrarian and do the exact opposite of what other people are doing and don't ever for a second accept that stuff from your employees where it hasn't been busy. The phone hasn't been ringing. Dig in and do what's necessary to make that phone ring to make those sales happen and I'll leave you with an example of what I'm doing.
Okay, what have I decided to do in December when as a semi-retired businessman, I could be sitting back putting up my feet heading to Florida.
But no no no.

If you're operating at a nine and a half, your team is operating at a seven and a half. If you're only operating at a seven and a half out of ten, then your teams operating at a five and a half. So you set the tone mentally, physically, energy, the whole thing.
Well, start setting the tone now for an amazing 2022. So, that is my message for today. It's all about avoiding what everybody else does. 99% of the people, you know, packing on the pounds, eating all the food, drinking all the booze, and all this stuff. When you as a BadAss Millionaire, you want to do the exact opposite.
There's nothing wrong with celebrating the season, but it doesn't mean that you have to start your new year with a thud.
What it means is pick your spots.
I tell my players all the time. I mean, I'm not a saint and I don't want to be a saint. I pick my spots. 97% of the time. I eat clean. I drink a gallon of water. I do my writing, I do my walking and all that great stuff, but I pick my spots for the other stuff and just because it's Christmas and New Year's doesn't mean you have to shut it down, and destroy your mind and destroy your body and get yourself all stressed and get yourself all bent out of shape. So that then you start the new year, you're physically ill in a lot of cases. I know a ton of business owners who worked their asses off all year long and they finally get a little bit of time off between Christmas and New Year's.
And what does their body and mind do? It shuts down on them. They get physically ill. So head the other direction. Be a renegade, be a contrarian and do the exact opposite of what other people are doing and don't ever for a second accept that stuff from your employees where it hasn't been busy. The phone hasn't been ringing. Dig in and do what's necessary to make that phone ring to make those sales happen and I'll leave you with an example of what I'm doing.
Okay, what have I decided to do in December when as a semi-retired businessman, I could be sitting back putting up my feet heading to Florida.
But no no no.

When everybody else is sitting around or drinking too much, or whatever the hell they're doing. I'm in there every day after I head in and dropped my daughter off. What am I doing? I'm writing. I'm improving. I'm getting point one percent better.
