Good morning men, Michael McLean.
Nobullbook.com coming to you from south of Jebb's Creek on a early Monday morning. I wanted to talk about - to tell you a little story about one of my favorite professional coaches on Earth, and his name is Dwane Casey as some of you would know, Dwane Casey is the head coach of the Detroit Pistons and the NBA.
And Dwane actually used to work for the Dallas Mavericks back in the day, when the Mavericks won the NBA league championship. I think it was 2010, doesn't matter. He was the assistant coach. He was the defensive Guru behind that championship Mavericks team and what makes that even more interesting is he worked for Mark Cuban for a number of years. So, you know, Casey not only coached was the assistant in Dallas but also part of that Mark Cuban culture that was Infamous for - I mean, he bought that team and he took them from the Outhouse to the penthouse and you know, Cuban's Fingerprints, of course, were all over that. Dwane Casey, when I run a five-star Mastermind, I do it in a different city.
Sometimes I'm in Orlando, sometimes Toronto, sometimes, Chicago. In Chicago I had Mike Ditka come and talk to the to the guys if we're Orlando, you know, whoever the pro coach is. I've had Claude Julien, the head coach, the Bruins at the time come and speak to us in Boston when we were there.
So when I held a few years ago, this would be probably 2012-2013 something like that. And I was having my five-star Mastermind in the city of Toronto. And I called up the Raptors and I called up the Leafs, the two major teams in Toronto.
And I asked, you know, how much would it cost for me to get the coach of one of those two teams or the general manager to come and speak to our guys over at the Westin where we were having our two-day closed door Mastermind like 18 business owners, myself my wife Krista. We just lock the doors for two days and work on our businesses and our personal lives, you know, top 1% stuff and it was interesting.
I sent an email to the team, the Raptors and to the Toronto Maple Leafs and it just shows you that it doesn't matter how famous or well-known a person is. It's just amazing. The Integrity you learn about certain people, especially athletes coaches, and celebrities to make a long story Dwane Casey got back to me within 72 hours. Like he didn't know me from Adam and he is assistant. Emailed me said, you know, Dwane would be happy to take time out of his schedule to come over to the Westin Hotel on this specific date.
It was a couple of months in advance and speak to us a bunch of entrepreneurs and insurance agents at the time. So Dwane came over on the day, and of course he was punctual on time. So here's the Coach of the Toronto Raptors. He's in his first year of a five-year contract. He's gone from the Pinnacle of the NBA, the world champion Dallas Mavericks. And now he's the head guy in Toronto in Toronto who I think finished dead last that year.
So he's rebuilding the entire culture in Toronto and he comes and he speaks to us for about an hour hour and 15 minutes and I'll never ever forget how like the class that this guy had, you know, some people just have it and this guy has it total badass and I'm not even talking about coaching like badass coach, for sure but I mean, just a badass guy. Like just integrity, character, punctuality, self-discipline, professional, the whole deal.
So, he comes over and, of course, he's early comes in, he drives up in a pickup truck. An absolute pickup truck up to the front door of the Westin - my wife brings him in and we put up these two bar stools always at the front of the room and I always interview the professional coaches or whoever Our Guest coaches at the time. And we just sit up there and man-to-man.
It's like we're having a beer and I interview these coaches and it's just amazing how candid and that they are because, you know, they're not dealing with the, the media. So you usually hear from these coaches on ESPN or whatever... it's all cliche.
it's a cliche seminar. You know, we got to get better and all this kind of stuff but Dwane Casey, he spoke to our group for an hour hour and 15 minutes and it was just uncut unplugged right straight from the heart. And it was one of my favorite all-time experiences as a consultant and Dwane's Message was incredible. His message was Pound The Rock and it's interesting because I never really heard that phrase before explained. So, he comes in, and he's, he's got one game left in this first year. So once again, it's his first year coaching, and he's inherited a last place team in the NBA. He understands that.
So, he's just completing his first season in Toronto. We're actually going to go to the game, the next night and they're not making the playoffs. So, he just ran practice that day. And he sits down and he tells us about that final practice that morning before he came to see us.
So, he talked about how he set the tone. It was the hardest he worked his players, the entire season. So here the Raptors are coming up to play their final game of the season. It's as most people would say, the game means nothing. And, you know, they're going to finish last place and the season's over.
So he talks about how hard he worked the players that day and he talked about setting the tone for next year. That is never ever, ever ever, he's never ever ever going to stop improving that 1% Every day is a goal and his theme for that first season in Toronto was Pound The Rock. Pound The Rock and this guy gets up and he stands in front of you know, the 20 of us and he amazing Storyteller. Amazing Storyteller - like all great coaches and he stands up there and he tells us the tale. The actual story, the stonecutter story of what pound The Rock means and he tells us his story he had like, I don't know, a crew of five Raptors employees and they went up to a quarry north of Toronto and they got this 2,000 pound Boulder. And he had the employees, bring it back and put it dead center in the Raptors locker room. This is day one. He's coming from Dallas to Toronto and he puts this Boulder in the middle of the dressing room, and he explains to us that that was their theme. Pound The Rock. So, when he was explaining this to us, he's got the pretend, you know, hammer in his hand and he's pretending to hit the stone, hit the stone. Hit the stone. So he not only gave us a verbal Pound The Rock but a visual and he did the same thing. He said, with his players where everything they did from day one, right up until the year before they won the NBA title in 2019, is pound The Rock and he had the players touch the rock, every practice every game, but that was their theme. As not just a team, but as an organization, One percent better one percent better, one percent better, one percent better.
He was like Nick Saban where he never ever talked about winning and losing. He talked about the process, get better, get better, get better and he talked about how they never focused on the other team. They never focused on other players. They focused on themselves, get better get better Pound, The Rock Pound The Rock Pound The Rock, The interesting story is Not only was this an amazing story and he had it on the wall in Toronto. He had the players Wearing t-shirts that was their theme and if you know what eventually happened Dwane coached for four five, six years. I'm not exactly sure and he took the Raptors from the Outhouse right up to the year before when they won the NBA title in nineteen. He took that team to the Pinnacle. He was fired that year. But the Raptors went and added Kawhi Leonard, Gasol and a few others and Nick Nurse his assistant coach, then took them in nineteen to the NBA Championship.
But what a lot of people didn't remember, of course, they didn't remember Was that it was, it was that Pound The Rock mentality from when they were in 30th Place when they were in 28th Place when they were in 12th, Place pounding the rock pounding The Rock, and what most people just remember is that 2019 championship team, but Dwane Casey's fingerprints were all over that organization and it's amazing because I took that theme when I bought the Perth Blue Wings seven years ago, we had our community hadn't won a championship since 1994. We're a small town. It's hard to compete with the city teams. A lot of people would say, it's impossible to win a Barkley Cup in a small community. And I took that theme And I literally did the same as Dwane did - I went and I got a boulder.
It was actually five hundred and three pounds and is still in the locker room today. And I got three guys and we put it in the middle of our locker room. And this is going back Six, seven years and I had t-shirts made up for the players. We had the signs and we took that simple concept that stone cutter tale of hitting that rock every single day and what it's about - It is, you can hit that rock 100 times. You could hit that rock, 500 times. You could hit that stone a thousand times hitting it, hitting it, hitting it hitting it, and it doesn't even look like you're making any progress, whatsoever. You're hitting it. You're hitting it. You're hitting. It is hopeless. It's hopeless. It's hard work, It's a Grind. It's hard hard work. And boom, you hit it 1001 times. And the stone cracks wide, open the stone cracks wide open.
That's your personal championship in your life or your business.
And I call those private victories where you're out, you're working out in the gym and nobody's seeing you, you're writing newsletters, you're working on the marketing.
You're doing the things that nobody sees and like Stephen Covey said private victories, preceed, public victories, and that's what pound the rock is all about hitting it a hundred times five hundred times a thousand times and it doesn't look like you're accomplishing anything and then you hit it 5001 times with that pickaxe. Boom, Stone breaks wide open success.

His number one charity in that community.
That is a badass millionaire. I wrote the check. He took it with him. Amazing, absolutely amazing, and we've kept in contact now from time to time, and just an amazing amazing guy. So I'll talk more about it in the book him and lots of other sports coaches.
